First Secret Society for Women

Alpha Delta Pi was founded as the Adelphean Society at Wesleyan Female College, the first college established specifically to grant degrees to women. The Adelphean Society was the idea of Eugenia Tucker, shown here in an oil painting by Glascock Reynolds, who persuaded five of her close friends--Octavia Andrew, Ella Pierce, Elizabeth Williams, Mary A. Evans, and Sophronia Woodruff--to form an association for improvement. On May 15, 1851, the six women debuted their Adelphean ribbons on campus, and the the first secret society for women was born!
